Guitar Synthesizers

Guitar Synthesizers

A guitar synthesizer basically marries up the functionality of a guitar with the technological capabilities of a synthesizer. Synthesizers are devices that can produce different kinds of music and musical sounds. This allows a guitar player to both add sounds and effects to their playing and/or to effectively play other instruments from their guitar equipment.

So, a guitar synthesizer allows the person playing it to add non-guitar music to the music he/she makes. They could, for example, add percussion and string instruments to the mix.

Some guitar synthesizers are built into actual guitars and can be used with either acoustic or electric guitars (as long as they are compatible with the synthesizer system). Here the guitar player can play the guitar as usual and/or add sounds and music from the synthesizer element that is in the instrument. These sounds will be controlled by the guitar strings as the player uses them. These types of guitar synthesizers are often known as MIDI synthesizers.

In some cases guitar synthesizers are not contained in a guitar but work as stand alone separate units. These may also be known as foot pedal synthesizer units as they are operated by the guitarist player's feet and stand on the floor.
